The “East Park Heritage – A film of People’s Memories of East Park” – DVD received praise and applause at its premiere on Saturday 21st June. 50 people, some of whom had been interviewed, attended East Park cafe to view the film which was produced by the Young Roots Heritage Project team, supported by Hull City Council’s Youth Development Service and Buzz Media.

The Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Brenda Petch, met with the young people prior to the screening, and wished them well with the event. The project is funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund.

Premiere of the film.

Over the last few months we have, as some of you will know, been collating material for our short film of people’s memories of Hull’s East Park.  The film is now ready – and you are invited to come and see its premiere!

The first showing of the film, which lasts about 15 minutes, will take place on Saturday 21st June at 12 noon.  Join us and other invited guests to see the film at East Park Cafe, see what we have been up to.

We hope you are able to join us, and look forward to receiving your comments on what we have achieved.  Thanks again for your help.

Heritage Project Coffee MorningThank you to those that turned up to our coffee morning on 12th April at Kingston Wesley Methodist Church. Although the turnout was lower than hoped for we still had an enjoyable and productive time.

Following our earlier visit to Hull City Council’s Archives, we put on display copies of the original plans of East Park, and also copies of architects sketches and plans of many of the park’s buildings.  Visitors found these fascinating – and they generated some useful comments.

We now have over 15 minutes worth of very useful and informative recorded clips in which people reveal their memories of East Park – including stories of the water shute, boating lake, animal enclosures, band stand and more. Very many thanks for your help. These clips will be added to in the next couple of weeks, and our film will be well on its way!

This project seeks to engage young people actively to learn about the history of Hull’s East Park. Supported by Hull CC’s Youth Development Service and Buzz Media (and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund), young people will gather people’s memories of East Park – using photography, sound recorded interviews and video.

Trees in East ParkA History Walk is later to be devised with printed leaflets available to visitors to the park. A short film, summarising our research, will be put on permanent display in the cafe or pavillion (hopefully by the Lord Mayor’s Parade – May 2008). Finally, we hope to add to the park’s future heritage by commissioning a new sculpture or piece of art to be mounted somewhere in the grounds.

We hope that you will help us to achieve our goals, and ask that you get in touch if you have particular memories you wish to share with us and others.
